But if something catastrophic were to happen, would you pray to God? Or would you as a "non-religous" decide that was the natural corse of order? Genuinely curious.

No a monk but as a lapsed Catholic, I find myself still tempted to pray. After a couple of decades it just becomes the way you are used to handling things, even if you know intellectually that it doesn't help.
