Hi Mr, Ford. I think we would all like to know: Who shot first? Han Solo or Greedo?

I dunno- I don't think this is it. My fear of spiders has nothing to do with my fear of getting bit. I have a slight fear of getting bit, but I think it's reasonable. It will hurt and I'd prefer not to be hurt, etc. When I see I spider that scares me, I'm not thinking: "Oh no! I better kill it so that it doesn't bite me!". Instead, I think: "That thing is horrible, I better kill it so that it isn't alive." I know you'd say that's not reasonable. I'd say it's not reasonable, too. But also, it's not something that's controllable. It's just instinctual. It's definitely not a fear of getting bit, though.

My fear of spiders is probably typical. I'm unreasonably afraid, but not so afraid that I can't approach it and kill it. My fear of wasps, however, is what I'd call a true phobia. My heart starts pounding, I start sweating, and I'll run away frantically without even considering what I must look like to others. It's absolutely terrifying to me. I'm even imagining the unique sound their wings make right now and feel like my skin is crawling and can feel my pulse quickening. I mention this because it's a more extreme version of the same fear, which has nothing to do with a fear of getting bit (or stung). It's an inexplicable, uncontrollable fear of the creature per se.

I have to say, this is a great /r/nocontext entry because it's not merely ridiculous sounding out of context (which is what's typical). Instead, it takes on an entirely different meaning depending on whether there's context.
