I find the memento mori is a really interesting concept in art. One if the best examples is Holbien's The Ambassadors. It contains two men, shown surrounded with instruments of science and the arts, portrayed as, to use a cliche, renaissance men. Its most intriguing feature is the off-white oval at their feet. It's not immediately obvious what this thing is. Place your head at the bottom left-hand corner and look up at the painting though, and you see a skull.

Take from it what you will, but I feel it's pretty clear that it's telling you that whatever you have in life, however great you are, there is still death (not that it should stop you enjoying your time at all).
