Can one transmit Ch'an, through Kung Fu training, without words?

Yes, correct. Mahakasyapa was the first Indian Patriarch of Ch'an. The lotus flower represented the transmission from Buddha, and the story appears, I believe, in the Lankavatara Sutra.
