In adverse current situations there may be a tendency to push to hard to make SOG, I think accepting diminished distances in these situations will be important. You could use current drift data from boat to ensure you don't pace too fast.

I'm interested in tech, I wish I could offer a floating classroom for your school. I have a Westsail 32 sailboat. I hold a USCG lic, and am also a registered nurse in NJ.
