Almost exact same process I went through when I read it a few years ago...

No! The second gate was found in antarctica. I think the episode is called Solitudes. It was held in storage as a back up. Then during a fight, the main Giza gate was believed destroyed, so the Antarctic gate then became the main gate. Then the Russians found the Giza gate that the USA had believed destroyed, it had just sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
THEN at some point, the Antarctic gate is destroyed by anubis which is when they have to rent their old Giza gate back from the Russians.
There were no alternate realities in there. There was a gate in Antarctica.
Edit - See below - In my haste to correct blasphemous Stargate mistakes, I didn't read properly and obviously mixed myself up, ignore me!

Its absolutely ridiculous that they won't allow a fully grown and mentally competent person choose something like that for themselves.
I work in intellectual disabilities, and if our guys want to drink, and it won't mess with their meds, we have to respect their decision.

Haha yep I know, I was already aware of the other side of the issue, working in the industry and all. I just get fired up about those sorts of things.
I HATE it when my workmates try and tell our supported people they can't have something, when most of the time, if they sit and think about it, they have no good reason. They might be intellectually disabled, but they are still human, and they are adults, and they have the right to make their own decisions. Drives me bonkers. Its amazing to see the difference in their behaviours from when they are working with the 'no' staff and when they are working with me who won't say no unless there's a legitimate health reason. My shifts are always calm, happy and peaceful, while others are always complaining about behaviours etc. Inside I'm thinking 'It's because you aren't listening to them at all you stupid fuck'.

Many/majority of AMA’s are thinly veiled ads. I don’t see why you need to criticize this specific one for it. People are clearly interested.
