It's mainly sizing. Usually basic stuff like general body dimensions, but then sometimes more specialized stuff. For example, one mercury/apollo astronaut had a left ring finger that had the tip cut off in a farm accident.

Now days, space suits are designed with modular, interchangeable parts so that you can put together a suit custom fit to almost any astronaut by just picking out the right-sized components and putting them together.

And of course, they make sure to only hire astronauts who they know for sure can have a suit sized for them without having to make custom parts.

What's funny is the other day I saw a guy walking around Costco still wearing his army CAC.

But yeah I used to have a NASA CAC just as an intern, so my first thought when I saw this thread was "Why the hell is he posting his ID on Reddit?" Followed by "He's just a contractor not a NASA scientist, and isn't this a major ethics violation?"

I was just an intern so I'm actually embarrassed that I knew this and he didn't.

That sounds insane compared to interning at modern day NASA

Meanwhile at NASA, unless you have a job that requires it (eg handling an emergency, or working as an astronaut), you get in trouble if you do that. Now, some people secretly do it anyway... staying nights, after hours, on weekends. Because there are rough deadlines on some projects. But that's the minority.
