Neuropsychiatrist in training...you're onto the right idea - relationships are altered in psychotic states, so while someone may connect with an animal more than a normal person, one may also be disconnected from all forms of life/consciousness and thus have no issues with killing them. Remember this - murder is a social construct - depending on the era, it's ok to kill certain people.
