How ubiquitous do you think misleading interfaces and so-called "dark patterns," like the one you discovered, are? Is there any way we can discover them for ourselves like you did?

Yeah I'm familiar with dark patterns, but it seems that our only option with dealing with what is basically best practices across the industry is kind of piecemeal. I wrote some guides for laypeople and power users to help them identify these behaviors (I was just curious about your own take/advice) but I'm also wondering if there's anything else that can be done. How effective do you think legislation like the California Consumer Privacy Protection Act would be at stopping something like this?
