In games with voice acting, how much do the voice actors work with the team? Do they interact and work on making things work well, or is it just a "speak into the can, get paid, and go" kinda situation?

That makes sense. I'm trying my damnedest to be a voice actor and I can't imagine getting a job and not putting your all into it. Unless of course you're Nigel Hawthorne and your best is the only setting you have

That's exactly my point! Voice acting is contributing a small but vital part into making a much bigger work of art a reality. It's the same as every other part- you have to really do your best, because if you don't it's obvious. I think of the Heavy Rain scene of "JAAASON" over and over. It makes a masterpiece into a memesterpiece.

With such a huge project line Watch_Dogs and Heavy Rain though it's inevitable that so bad communication will happen but nevertheless I can't help but blame everyone in the chain- the actor for not learning more, the director for not fixing things, QA for not picking up on it being unpleasant to hear.

Of course, we notice bad voice acting far more than good because good voice acting isn't even noticable as voice acting. You just hear the character and the scene and are taken in by it.
