That's how they catch people in lies. They ask a question, then they talk about something else and ask the question again. They're looking for any inconsistencies that they can nail you on. The reason it was 8 times was because he really wanted to have a look in the car and he didn't get probable cause the first 7 times.
As for why he didn't just ask to search the vehicle, in my experience as a teacher you don't really want to ask a question when you want a certain answer. It's giving all the power to the other person. He probably had a feeling your friend would just say no, and that leaves the cop in a weak position. So instead of asking, he tried to get probable cause to demand a search.

I'm a para-pro in a severe/profound disabilities room at a public school. The worst we get is probably about the best you get. Though I make a little less than half what you make, but boy are the hours and vacations nice.
