Modern society condemns paedophilia. We'll be called out on other stuff we think is normal now.

Also, if you're a Harvard professor or fellow, and you try to bullshit, there's probably someone who actually knows close by.

Loads of features promised in the buildup never materialised (and never will, unless they rewrite it from the ground up). Things like no skybox, rotating planets, orbiting planets.

Many features promised they failed to deliver on launch, too, the videos they released of early builds looked far better than at launch. I'm talking animal diversity, animal interaction, multiplayer, a decent story, and stuff to do. Some of these have been slightly rectified with recent patches, and there's a new big patch coming soon which (hopefully) will flesh out the story. These things can be fixed, and to be fair, Hello Games (the creators of NMS) have been working on them. NMS is in a much better state now than it was in at launch.

The main problem was that they went completely silent after launch, with the game they released not being close to the game promised. There was no interaction at all with the millions of dissatisfied customers. Many people thought it was a bait and switch, and they'd take the money and run. It turns out they're still developing the game, but that wasn't apparent with the complete lack of communication.

tl;dr : NMS promised loads it didn't deliver on at launch, then Hello Games didn't respond at all to complaints.

edit : I'm one of the few who does quite like NMS, even at launch status. I didn't appreciate their lack of communication, though. Too busy playing Path of Exile at the moment, though, and GGG are really good with their player base (they have to be, they only get money if you like them, the game's free).

And if you do relapse, remember that your tolerance isn't what it once was. Don't jump in how you left off, it could well kill you.

Do your books feature strong male characters?

I only ask because the last few books I've read have had female main protagonists. I personally don't consider the sex of the strong characters in the book a selling point.
