Imagine eating a strawberry while sniffing on a chemical. Then try imagining that nothing smells as it's supposed too. This is what gets me. I think OP is doing the most rational thing in his position.

I wouldn't be able to keep sane if my smell and taste got distorted to such a bizarre degree.
