There's a startup in the Bay area, Perfect Day, that's making vegan dairy products. How do you see yourself in this emerging market? Do you seek to compete against everyone, or do you see some advantage in collaborations as you all venture into a new field of food science?

Shot in the dark:

I'm applying to microbiology PhD programs at the moment. I love what I studied and I love doing research though I'm afraid of the saturation of the market. A professor I wanted to get a letter of recommendation from said I should reconsider my career path (PI at a national laboratory or in industry) because of that. I understand it's important to do what you are passionate about but can you guys give me a reality check about job availability and such?

New fields in science emerge to explore novel perspectives as the paradigm of existing fields limit its own progress. For example, my interest in and frustrations with synthetic biology has lead me to study synthetic microbial ecology.

Do you have any burgeoning fields you're excited by? What kind of questions do they seek to answer?

I'd like to add that your books were one of my first introductions to biology. It got me excited for my AP Biology class and helped instigated a long life passion for biology. Thank you!
