Can you explain the pros and cons of an Engine License and a Deck License? I’ll be attending a naval college next year and I want to make sure I pick the one that suits me best. Also, what do you do now that you’re on shore?

I don’t mind getting my hands dirty, I really like to fix things, I’m a fast learner, etc. I’m just not sure about the kind of environment it would be on the ship. Would I constantly be filthy and sweaty? Would I basically be doing nothing until I get a better ranking license? I like the appeal of the deck license because it seems a bit more glamorous and exciting, but I’m pretty torn between both.
