As a Vancouverite, I'm not surprised. We have a large homeless population and they target anything they can find to steal and sell.

The dangerous area is about a ten-minute walk to downtown, where the ships dock. The people who live in apartments there often make calls to the police when a particular individual is making them feel unsafe, but nothing is done about it. For folks planning to visit Vancouver, stay away from Hastings Street and explore places away from downtown and you'll be fine.
