"Es wächst zusammen, was zusammen gehört" a quote from Willy Brandt, former German Chancelor, on the fall of the Berlin Wall, on 9th of November 1989. It could be translated as "Things that belong together, will [over time] grow together [to a unit]".
This was contrary to the chancelor in charge at that time, Helmut Kohl, who wanted a fast unification - and this is how it happened already one year later in 1990.
Maybe if there were a longer period of economic adjustment between the two states, it wouldn't have been so hard on Eastern Germany.
