I had a thought about this:
What if you use a Base64 encoded JSON data in a private Note? Assuming it is possible for SF to write/edit a note.

I'll chime in to add that if you can't find a local Hackathon, finding a project to do with the new tool can be a great way to get started. You can usually find some tutorials just to give you some hooks to start with, but actually trying to use it on a real project is the way to go. I, personally, have a hard time just "reading the docs" without a practical reason to learn something.
