Not even close. Not precisely, and not literally. Mendel didnt identify or pick and specific genes. He selected existing phenotypes.

You are misusing the word "engineered".
Artificial selection does not directly manipulate the genetics of the plant, only selects the best combination of traits for a desired outcome.

that is factually incorrect. artificial selection is not genetic engineering.
