Allen, how do you recommend someone to learn coding by themselves? Is University necessary or can one make successful apps even if they are completely self taught?

I'm really sick of my situation in my life and was hoping to maybe make some extra income from coding (something i have wanted to do for a while now). I feel like coding will give me the artistic freedom to pursue my interests while improving my financial situation. I'd really appreciate any advice :)
