I was deaf for 21 years when they put one of the early implants into my head (this was around 1995) It does indeed matter how young you are when you get them, if you were deaf for the majority of your life. My parents answer to the 'ordinary life' was putting me in the mainstream education system, which in the early 70s was a very novel concept up here in Canada. I'm pretty mainstreamed as a result and the cochlear is great for enjoying movies! haha

I wasn't born deaf, but was for 21 years when I got mine- the therapy required is a real battle. I wore mine for 6 years then I stopped wearing them when I had kids haha
