Are you certain that the prosecution didn't believe his story? Could it have been that they were worried that his change in statements could have been used to impeach his credibility and the credibility of the case in chief?

Edit: In other words, can you say for certain that it was not a tactical decision vs. a credibility decision?

Thank you for the response. I am a practicing attorney but not a criminal defense attorney.

I admit that I have not done the research that you have on this case but my "gut" feeling (default to truth you could argue) is that this is not unlike a million other tactical decisions lawyers make before and during trial.

When we have enough evidence to prove our case, we aren't going to expose the case to additional uncertainty of a witness who has changed his story (for what ever reason).

Sometimes you have to use the evidence you have.

Also, there aren't absolutes like that. If you can establish motive for the change in testimony, it can rehab the witness a bit.
