Thank you for your work and responses in this thread.

I’ve had anxiety and depression since I was a child (diagnosed at 9 and 14 respectively).

I am fortunate that even with my mental health issues I was able to make it through college and get a job in my field (all while unmedicated) and now am able to see a psychiatrist regularly through my insurance (which took about 7 months to finally get the first visit).

Even with the financial aspect being covered and the long waiting time to get a foot in the door, trying to find the right balance of medications is literally a guinea pig test, trying out nearly random medications until you find what suits you over a long period of time.

The brain is super complex and we are still quite early in understanding how to manipulate the brain for things as complex as mental health.

A fun little tidbit: I’m diagnosed with depression but I’ve found an anti-psychotic class drug to be the most effective!

Quite the opposite. The one I’m on (Seroquel) acts as a sedative but because of that I take it at night.

The result is that my sleep has been much better and my energy/mood throughout the day is much higher than it used to be.

The Seroquel helped greatly with my depression and I’m on lexapro mainly for the anxiety.

Not the OP obviously but from personal experience having consolidated information in one package helps a lot for me, verses having little bits of knowledge spread out over various people with various teaching styles.

It’s interesting you describe it that way. I’ve kinda felt like my mental capabilities have certainly gone down since I started medications in general, but I think for me that’s primarily because my anxiety brain was hyper thinking all the time so now that I’m more chilled out I’m not brain churning every second. Takes more active focus to really retain stuff. But that’s been true since I started on the Lexapro 4 years ago, not necessarily a Seroquel thing.

I mean full disclosure I’m a space cadet to begin with so it’s hard to tell if the meds are actually making that worse.

But when I think of zombie I think of exhausted and unable to function. That’s how I felt when I was unmedicated, and when I tried abilify I felt like that too. But Seroquel has only given me better sleep and more energy.
