A comment and a question. First, a friend if mind was a professional snowmobile stunt rider sponsored by a major energy drink who injured his spine to the point that he is now paraplegic. His recovery an rediscovery of his love of the sport and how to present it in a different way is truly inspiring. He is now a spokesman for a robotic limb manufacturer, hosts sporting events, and speaks to people about recovery after traumatic injury. You're Experiencing the shock of rediscovery. Embrace it and a new path will lay out before you. Remember that prophesies are self-fulfilling. Question: Did you find that your tastes had changed regarding foods you formerly liked/disliked?

You mention several times that your greatest fear is antibiotic resistant bacteria, but can you explain a bit more? I've been reading a lot about this and always wonder why this seemingly inevitable reality is never give more than a byline that gets buried in some other report in the media and even in your comments (sorry). This is a big deal isn't it?!?! I mean, a really by deal. It seems like people are legitimately more worried about turning into a zombie then they are about penicillin becoming ineffective. Isn't that kind of the CDC's co-main purpose--public awareness? You say "it would set medicine back 100 years..."
I think it was a book, "The Demon Under The Microscope," that first made me wonder why I didn't hear more about this possibility--I think that was the book that first made me realize the economics of drug companies who are less interested in antibiotic research than in researching medicines to treat chronic afflictions, too. I think it indicated no new antibiotics had been fashioned since the 70's. Sorry, questions...I have a million: --Is this outdated information? Are we synthesizing new antibiotics now(or trying, and just unable too?)? Is that the main goal of government funded research right now-- Developing new antibiotics? --Can you perhaps detail what you mean by "set medicine back 100years"? Are we headed for a time when people go into the delivery room or operating room and don't know if they will survive the operation? In my lifetime? Are we looking at a huge rise in first world infant and maternal mortality during birthing?
--Are we going to see large numbers of the population die each year from some super flu in the near future--I mean epidemically high rates of death? Forget the zombies. I'm concerned about the flu!!! You keep mentioning it is above your pay grade to tell--maybe you can tap a colleague on the shoulder and give them the keyboard :-) (just kidding). Thanks for the AMA! I am simultaneously fascinated and baffled by the CDC! Wash your hands people!!
