I also agree with your assessment of the state media. As bad as Reddit may be, Facebook and twitter are even lower.

When someone posts an article that requires 5 minutes of sustained attention it gets ignored in favor of clicking on someone's picture, which 9 times of of ten non verbally states: Hey Facebook friends look at how good my life is!!! (or at least the online representation of it)

R/longtext is a good refuge for good reading and civil conversation in a age where those are a scarcity.
