I haven't written anything myself, but my wife self-published her book on Amazon back in January. She's had almost 3,000 sales so far.

What worked really well for her was releasing a free short story that featured the same character as her full book, along with a short excerpt from the novel at the end. That drummed up interest and helped get a few more sales.

It's also much less effort than writing a full book to release for free, and another for a price.
