I work in automation programming PLCs. The frac company work I do is just one thing. I do programming on pipelines and in factories and anywhere that needs automation of a process. It's basically reading in signals from devices and interpreting them. For example: if we have a pressure transmitter on a well head that shoots up then we need to shut down the process so we don't blow iron. As far as web programming in the oil field idk...some companies use web based software to remotely view data like tank levels etc so maybe looking into something like that....

There's some stuff about it that definitely blows.....But generally they poll as fast as the electrical signal comes across from the device and has cycle response times of 100ms or less....You dang sure won't get better shutdown safety wise from an operator manually controlling...
But with that said...they can only handle what they are programmed for...You can't program years of experience and knowledge of a good operator....

What companies do you generally do work with? I wrote a lot of the automation code for a few frac companies in the Midland area.
Edit: which frac companies I meant
