In an awkward situation, what do you do to smooth things over? (Assuming the ice isn't already broken)

Hi, what I'm really curious to know is how does it feel to be able to, with minimal effort, affect sometimes life forever? If someone saw you at the shops, or ran into you in the street, they'd likely come away with a story they'd retell for years to come, yet it cost you nothing. How does it feel to be that influential?
