Respectfully, Faith in all it's various veins and pockets have elements of what is defined as cult like behavior. one of the aspects of a cult is the process of association taken to the extreme. So, if your family was/is less-progressive or independent, it's not surprising that so much of this resonates.

There is variation in all things. Ones approach to faith can be a personal journey, and if she finds that at some point the things that are attractive about The Church are no longer attractive - she can leave without restraint. That is the the most pressing difference, the ability to walk away.
