So what’s the benefit for the other wives in this situation?

My husband was this for me at first! One day out of the blue I realized he was quite attractive in addition to being fun to hang out with. Sometimes you need a minute.

The misconception is that they work. They do not work. People do kill a rhino just for the horn and a shark just for the fin. What’s worse, some of the animals have the body part removed while they are still alive, and are left to die extremely painful deaths.

Some zoos are only for entertainment but all accredited zoos and aquariums work on conservation in the wild. They house animals that can’t be released due to turmoil in their region but do release them if it becomes safe. Zoo animals are also like an insurance policy: if a wild population goes extinct we can reintroduce the species from captive populations once the habitat is made suitable again. Supporting those zoos can help animals in the wild.

Hi Joyce! Petter was kind enough to provide a quote for an article I wrote about human-elephant conflict recently. He said HEC is the biggest threat to elephants right now. This was eye opening to me as poaching still gets the most coverage, at least in the US. I’m planning a project for my graduate program and would like to raise more awareness about HEC. Do you have any suggestions for how Americans can help? We can already not buy ivory but I’m drawing a blank as to how we can make a difference in the HEC field. Thank you!

PS - I was just in Namibia and Kenya and saw wild elephants for the first time. It was something I never thought I’d do because I learned about poaching as a child and thought they’d be extinct by now. Thank you for working so tirelessly to help make sure that doesn’t happen.
