One of the products of uranium decay fission is a radioactive isotope of iodine. If this is absorbed into the body (water, food, etc) it will collect in the thyroid and damage the cells there. If you take a massive dose of (normal) iodine, the thyroid won't absorb as much (or hopefully any) of the radioactive stuff, and excess (both normal and radioactive) iodine will be excreted normally.

This is a similar tactic as the treatment for ethylene glycol (automotive antifreeze/coolant) poisoning. You're supposed to drink several shots of alcohol so your liver deals with the ethanol instead of turning ethylene glycol into glycolic acid.

and if you don't know how to use gerrit, there's a wiki article for that: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Doc:_using_gerrit

the wiki has other resources for building/contributing, etc. as well.

Why do you think there aren't as many diesel cars in the US as in Europe? Why do people drive prii when they could get the same 40mpg+ in a TDi and have ~240 ft-lb of torque?

hmm, my '09 Jetta TDi was $23k, comprable to the midrange between the SE and SEL (or whatever those letters are) of the gas versions. Priuses were the only thing close to it in mileage at the time and just as expensive.

As for working on it, I agree. As much as I'm mechanically inclined and computer savvy, I leave it to the dealership still.
