I cycled from Madrid to Gabon in 2008. I had no trouble in Sierra Leone.

Nice, I did it with an old Cannondale T800 with Schwalbes, all good until the sub Saharan rain forest....

No, to be honest. i'd planned to cycle the whole west coast, but I ran out of time and cash after 5 months, and had to get bailout from family to fly from Gabon to South Africa and then exit to my impending life. It wasn't really my trip. I piggybacked a my mate's trip. he started in Seoul and biked across Asia, the middle East and then the West coast of Africa. he completed the trip, I didn't. my biggest regret was missing out on the Congos, Angola and Namibia.

Actually, having done the same thing, no training is necessary. Just determination. you are going to get a sore arse no matter what. You sit on a bike for 12 hours a day in no particular hurry. It never becomes comfortable. You just deal with it. Except taking a shit in a sand storm, you never get used to that.
