They didn't have guns the thing is that pre 9/11 passengers assumed that as long as they cooperated no harm would come to them. 9/11 changed that. People won't be passive anymore because they know that they'll die regardless. Anyone who tried to take over a plane with a knife now would be bumrushed and killed. They might take out a few people with them but when you are up against 200 pissed off people you lose.
