I think people forget how easy it is to mold people's minds with disinformation. Just look at the right wing info sphere in the US - there is a huge set of the population that has been conditioned to disbelieve any empirical fact delivered by any news source that isn't Fox / Rush / Breitbart / FB Meme, etc.

EDIT: Getting a lot of comments saying that the left is the same. Yes, MSNBC, CNN, WaPo, NYTimes lean left. That said, they aren't actively pursuing an anti-science, anti-fact, anti-intellectualism narrative. Saying that the right and the left are the same is simply untrue. Fox and it's ilk are in the propaganda business.
