Hey, I was actually a little brother when I was a kid! Honestly the best piece of advice I can give is don't just drop out if you lose interest. I went through three big brothers and only one of them stuck around more than a couple weeks. If you're interested in doing this you must be committed. Remember, a lot of these kids already have abandonment issues - please don't add to them. I still keep in contact with the big brother that stuck around, and I'm 22.

Well, I was put into the program by way of the Boys and Girls club. I was actually sent to one of the Tim Hortons Foundation camps when I was 9! It was in Kananaskis and, man was it amazing. I can't urge people more to donate to the Tim Hortons Foundation - because it truly helps kids with little to no financial help experience something positive in an otherwise not so positive life.
Now in terms of the big brothers program, I moved cities when I was 10 and it was obvious to my mom that I was in need of some guidance, so she put me back into the big brothers program in hopes of a better experience (the first brother, like I said previously, didn't last more than a couple weeks). Unfortunately that didn't pan out, but we gave it another try. Que my "Big" Alex. He really helped me, he started me on my path of martial arts and breaking down what it was to be a good person. He even invited me and my mom to his passing of the bar when he became a lawyer. I felt incredibly honoured to have that experience, as I've never been to an event so... "fancy"? He exposed me to the culture of his family (he was Chinese) which made me really appreciate other walks of life, and helped me become more adventurous in terms of meeting new people, trying new food, and taking the time to understand others.
If you're interested in becoming a Big, do it for the right reasons - not just for the volunteer experience on your resume. You could really turn a kids life around.
