How would you respond to those who say that European nations, as well as Australia in the case of refugees from Indonesia and other places in the Pacific, have no duty or responsibility to rescue those who would enter their countries illegally?

Obviously it's a humanitarian issue, but how do you respond in a manner that may convince people to look at it that way, as opposed to simple-minded views of economics?

I've heard that safe passing distance is when you're in the other lane and can see both headlights of the truck in your rearview. Is that a pretty good gauge for safety? Or should it be even further?

Why would they do that?
