But Chicago is a perfect example of what I am talking about and it has exactly what you say you enjoy: human scale, walkable neighborhoods with greenery and space.

Look around Wicker Park, Lincoln Park, Rogers Park, and other neighborhoods in Chicago. All of them have huge mixtures of SFH, two flats, three flats, garden apartments, and 5 story apartments. There will be 2 bedroom homes next to a 5 story apartment or a 8 Plex. It totally works. I think we have been brainwashed to think anything other than single family homes side by side is ugly. Old Town on the near north side is a perfect example too.

All of these neighbhoods were built when you could essentially build anything you want, and they all turned out to be beautiful neighbhoods.

Likewise, if we don't allow these larger housing types everywhere, housing will become even more unaffordable.
