Home econ with uniforms? Where/when was this experience? I was a girl scout from 2001-2007, and very little of what we did could be described that way.

We went camping ~6 times a year. On those trips, we learned a variety of survival and outdoorsy skills - how to use a camp stove, how to make one from household objects, how to hike and camp safely, identifying local flora/fauna, how to build and cook over a fire, etc. As well as fun outdoor activities like canoeing, archery, horseback riding, and sailing.

I learned how to perform basic car maintenance. How to do first aid and cpr.

To say nothing of the incredible business and personal finance skills you learn participating in the largest girl-run business in the world. Money handling skills, salesmanship, budgeting, etc.

And yeah, also some home ec stuff. We learned some sewing, cooking, gardening, and babysitting skills, too.

As well as the constantly reinforced values of community service, kindness, and personal responsibility.

Sorry for the essay, but I'm really passionate about girl scouts. I credit the organization for a lot of skills I have as an adult, and for helping form the woman I am today. I don't doubt that somebody may have had this experience, especially in the past. But please don't let this color your experience of girl scouts, or keep you from putting your daughters in a troop.

"Medical malpractice" isn't really a thing in Texas. Not legally speaking, at least. You can't sue for anything short of "gross negligence," which is an extremely high bar. So medical oversight is left up to individual hospitals and the medical board. Who may or may not be motivated to do anything.

Can confirm: I've probably done a cumulative two years in restaurants, and I rarely eat in restaurants. Being waited on makes me uncomfortable.

Also, I know exactly how much food is microwaved, and how health inspections mean jack shit because everybody always knows when they're coming and makes stuff nice beforehand, and how casual servers are with putting their hands on food, and how insane the markup is (even through everybody in the building, from the busboy to the GM, is making peanuts), and I just don't go.

I do still enjoy takeout, though. I'm a hypocrite and I hate cooking.

Are you familiar with Lundy Bancroft's work in rehabilitating domestic abusers with Emerge? How do you feel about the prospect of rehabilitation/treatment of abusers and narcissists?
