What was the mentality you and your peers had going into the war and coming out of the war (either war, but more specifically WWII)?

From a business perspective, I can tell you right now, very few businesses would have the foresight or balls to invest in something, no matter how high the return might be, if it would only possibly come to fruition 8 years later. Not unless they were one of the biggest, and even then.
