Hi sorry I know I’m not the OP but I just wanted to say that I had a shit time in group too. Left it and did the therapy course on my own when I was feeling better. I found it really patronising, and it made me uncomfortable because I felt like they were treating us as ‘crazy’ people. I wanted it to be more human, more compassionate. It’s good to know I wasn’t the only one.

Hi! Thanks for doing this AMA.

I wanted to ask you how common it is that people resolve severe mental health problems on their own?

I was extremely suicidal on and off for years. My first reaction to any amount of stress was ‘fuck it I’m gonna kill myself’. I was on different meds, had hours of therapy and they even got me to attend group DBT but nothing helped me.

The only thing that did was change (in my life situation - moving back home), time, and doing DBT on my own through a workbook/listening to podcasts.

I’m sorry to say but the bad experiences I’ve had have left me with a rather cynical view of the mental health treatment available. Particularly the group: it felt super patronising.

Not sure what my question really is, I just wanted to share this and see if this resonates with you or with any of the clients you’ve seen in therapy?

Hi! I’m interested in doing this one day, thanks for doing an AMA! My question may sound a bit naive lol, I’d LOVE to do TEFL but it seems like 80% of the jobs/teaching courses are based in China... like they really really need people out there.

I’ve never been but China just terrifies me. Are you apprehensive about going? How do you cope going somewhere so alien?

I’m from the UK and in our student employment fairs teaching English in China is always there.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!

As an add on question, why do you think there’s a big push for people to go teach in China? Why there?

Some other guy commented something similar, and to be more blunt with my original question -

There is a lot you hear about on the news/online about, basically, how dodgy the Chinese government is. The culture I feel is quite toxic and you have to work so hard all the time. China frightens me.

What do you think of that? Or do you find that doesn’t affect you, as a foreign teacher coming in from the outside?
