To clarify, he's saying they use the canvas element for those features, not that they're using canvas fingerprinting for those features.
I don't know what browser plugin /u/gunch was using for this, but it's very likely it just warns about all uses of the canvas element and is not necessarily capable of determining whether a site is doing actual fingerprinting.

However, Tor Browser is currently unable to distinguish between legitimate uses of the canvas element and fingerprinting efforts, so its warning cannot be taken as proof of a website's intent to identify and track its visitors.

As a software engineer: that "backtracking" statement basically means "Fine we'll just deprecate it for V3 and then when Manifest V4 rolls around it'll be disabled completely and we can say 'we just removed a deprecated behavior'."

Wait, so you're saying that an app built by a world-class comedian and his depressed Canadian "friend" that's seemingly hastily assembled and being guerrilla marketed on Reddit just in time to capitalize on COVID-induced isolation isn't AAA-Grade software? Color me surprised.
