It seems that journalism - at the highest levels - is becoming a profession for upper-middle class and upper class people
Not just the highest levels. Entry level reporting usually requires someone to pack up and leave their home in Alabama for a entry level newspaper gig in Scranton that pays $28,000. I don't know how a college grad can justify moving across the country for that kind of wage unless you know that Papa will pay your rent if it comes down to it.
EDIT to add: and if you're lucky enough to get a reporting job in Washington, you're probably doing better than your peers. Washington is one place that can't seem to get enough reporters because everyone from BuzzFeed to theBlaze wants a bureau there.
