Fuck, dude, you accomplished everything I want from life despite those odds. Or is it because of? Sometimes I think my easy going life and no real worries are the cause of my complete lack of motivation in that regard.

Didn't someone once value a person's life at like ~2.5m? If so I'd say about a million is fair, yes it was only a few years, but forming years. Even adults have troubles getting over prison, this guy is probably going to have prison PTSD for life.

From what I gather in the rest of the thread there is a lot of hostility in the deaf community towards CI. A lot of them have always communicated through ASL, and A big part of that community seem to think of themselves being deaf as less of a disability and more of them just being 'the way they are'. To them then CI would be like a bionic ocular implant giving them a function they "don't need". Personally, I think it's more akin to sunglasses, though. Giving you a function you don't really need (to filter bright light/give hearing), but which can significantly improve your quality of life.
