I believe DC did that voluntarily. IIRC they were allowed to use the name Captain Marvel for the character but not the comic. They were calling the comic Shazam and decided it would be better to make the hero's name match the title.

Hey Jim! So in Parks and Rex we find out over time that while Terry/Larry/Gerry's time at work isn't so great, he's got an amazing life outside of work. Did you have a hand in adding that aspect to the character? Was he always intended to have an unexpectedly great life? How did that influence your portrayal of the character?
