I just wanted to say here that I was recently responsible for making a decision like this for one of my parents, and despite knowing what they wanted, and having promised them to their face that I would carry through with it, and having documentation to support their wishes... I was still about to assist in ending a life, and recall telling the doctor over the phone "I know what I need to say to you but I can't bring myself to say it. I just can't do it."

It's a terrible thing, but a promise was a promise. You weren't alone in thinking that way.

Yeah, the particular strain (Reston) was deadly to the monkeys but asymptomatic in humans.
