In Jr. high there was a student who bullied me. He had been held back twice so he was 2 years older and bigger than everyone. In 8th and 9th grade he somehow always ended up in the classes I was in and did everything he could to sit close enough to be able to hit me with something every time the teacher turned away. I tried everything I could to get the teachers and principle to help. My parents even went to the school and had a conference with the principle. He never even got detention for anything. He hit me with a hammer he made in metal shop and I had to get 6 stitches in the back of my head and had a concussion. He handed it to a friend and said I fell and hit my head. Nobody had the balls to say anything about it so nothing happened.

After my freshman year we moved to the high school. He didn't pass any of his classes and was spending another year in 9th grade. I don't know why anyone thought it was a good idea.

Anyway the summer after 9th grade I was playing baseball. I was walking home from practice one day with a friend and the bully came running out of a house we were walking past. He must have been bored not having anyone to fuck with during the summer break. So he and his friend started pushing me and calling me names. I decided I had had enough and swung the bat. It hit his friend and knocked him down and he stayed there holding his arm. Found out later it broke his arm just below the shoulder. The bully pulled out a knife and that was all I needed to make the decision that it was ending at that exact moment. He tried to cut me with the pocket knife and I hit him in the nose with the bat. He dropped the knife and grabbed his broken nose. I started swinging the bat as hard as I could. I don't know how many times I hit him but it was a lot. The friend that was with me is the only reason that the bully is still alive. He took the bat and pulled me off of the bully. Both of them had to go to the hospital so of course the police got involved.

The police came to my house and my parents smartly told them they would bring me in the next day with a lawyer to answer questions. The lawyer got all of the documentation from the school about all of my complaints about him bullying me. They got statements from some classmates who witnessed it and others that he bullied. The police decided I was defending myself from 2 people that were both two years older than I was and they were both armed with knives. They also both got arrested for drug possession. They had a couple hits of acid and some weed on them when they went to the hospital and forgot about it.

In the end I didn't get in trouble and the school principal had to resign and he moved somewhere else and got a job as a teacher I heard. The school put in stronger anti bullying policies and made the administrators document any complaints of bullying and send them in every week to the school board to review to make sure the proper steps were being taken to prevent and punish bullying.

This was all in the early 90s. I saw the bully about 10 years later. He had gotten into drugs really hard and never even finished the 9th grade. His drug use was so bad that he has permanent brain damage and now he just sits around and picks his nose and drools. He barely even knows his own name and has to live in a state run home for mentally handicapped. He looked like he was 70 and he was only around 26. I don't even know if he is still alive. His body was really fucked up from his drug use so he might already be dead. It's a shame his brain was damaged too much for him to realize what he had become. Sounds like an asshole thing to say but really, fuck him.

US law enforcement is 100% about control. I would guess de-escalation training is probably 1% or less of the training they receive. It's all about taking control of the scene and any possible suspects as fast as possible upon arrival. A large portion of the assholes and bullies in high school went onto careers in law enforcement because it gives them a license to treat other people like garbage and if necessary, physically force them to comply. The top 5 bullies in my graduating class are all law enforcement officers and all have had multiple complaints but have never been punished.

From what I've seen and heard an officer who tries to de-escalate a dangerous situation instead of drawing their sidearm and demanding compliance will be ridiculed by their fellow officers. Accused of being soft and not having the backbone to do "real" police work.

The one thing that could fix law enforcement in the US is if the good cops snitched on the bad ones. The code of silence in law enforcement is exactly the same as in the mafia or in prison gangs. Until they step forward and report the bad cops things will never change here. The good cops ignore and sometimes even lie to protect their "brothers."

Once they understand that random is actually random they will be able to move on.

Some people have the opinion that if you aren't bedridden or in a vegetative state you should be able to work. They want everyone to pull their weight, pull themselves up by the bootstraps. They elect people who want to kill social services and want to drug test people who get benefits from the government.

If you are disabled even short term they will come out of the woodwork. People you have known for your entire life will constantly question why you can't go to work or get a job doing X. If they are family members they will talk to other family members and say things like "I don't know why he can't get a job doing x?" or "He could work if he wanted to."

Some people see those who are disabled and are mad that they are having to work to support themselves and their family while other people "claim" disability and don't have to do anything but watch tv all day.

So unless you are drooling and wearing a helmet being led around by a helper they think you should suck it up and get back to work.
