This isn't as black and white as many people make it seem. He's a former telecom lobbyist who left (I believe in the mid-2000s) to do venture capital work, and I believe a few of his companies are internet-based and would benefit from an open internet.

It's also worth noting that he's independently wealthy (from his VC work) so unlike past FCC chairs who were bureaucrats that tended to cash in after their term by themselves becoming telecom lobbyists he has no need to do so.

FCC commissioner is a tough position to fill because of how much money is involved and the amount of technical and bureaucratic knowledge required.
