Hello fellow New Yorker. Just wanted to ask, what's the proper way of handling minor emergencies like smelling gas or maybe a carbon monoxide alarm going off?
The reason I ask, is because both of those things have happened to me. The first time was the gas smell, I called 911 and about 3 fire trucks showed up and I felt really bad, specially considering the fact that I live in the 5th floor with no elevator.
The second time was the carbon monoxide alarm going off, I didn't want to call 911 because I didn't want to waste firefighters time, so I called 311... who then transferred me to 911.
So how do I handle situations like this and determine if the situation really merits me calling 911?

Even if he did marry her it wouldn't help. A j1 visa has a 2 year home residency requirement, meaning that after his exchange program ends he needs to return to the home country and stay there for two years. If he doesn't stay there for two years he will never be able to change his status.
