Certifications? At best, you'd have to pass the JLPT, which shouldn't be very hard for someone at your level. You wouldn't need to study abroad in Japan to be a professional subtitler; this isn't a requirement at all.

Trust me; I've done professional translation for several years and am friends with subtitlers and text translators in the Japanese entertainment industry. You could go legit and actually do this full-time.
