Most consumer attorneys I've worked with (and my contact list includes about 10,000 of them) haven't done only one thing their entire careers. Many start out working for big insurance defense and then cross the aisle to become plaintiff's lawyers (or vice versa). Or they start working at a prosecutor's office then become criminal defense lawyers (or vice versa). Usually the ones who do one thing their entire careers have names that end in "Junior" and inherit their dad's law firm.
Why is this? Because being a plaintiff or criminal defense lawyer means you are a small business owner. And how many people do you know were able to start successful small businesses right out of school? Especially one that leaves you with a boatload of debt? Most people just aren't in that position, so they take the jobs where they can find them and then branch off into the work they're passionate in once they've established a name for themselves along with some financial security.
And furthermore, most people don't want a fresh-faced 25-year old just out of school defending them in court or taking on the insurance company. Finally- that fresh-faced 25-year old isn't going to have the same connections at the courthouse that a more veteran attorney will.
Long story short- being a law student isn't exactly authoritative experience.

As a fellow Circa-1997 Compuserve denizen, which forums did you hang out in?
"GO RPGAMES" and "GO MPGAMES" were my jam back in the day.
